Escape into the beautiful Whakarewarewa Forest, one of Rotorua’s most spectacular natural assets. Famous for its magnificent stands of towering Californian Coastal Redwoods it is just five minutes drive from the city centre. Here you can experience some of the finest walking and mountain bike trails in the world. Not to mention taking in superb panoramic views of Rotorua City, Lake and surrounding district.

Entry to the forest, tracks and Gift Shop & Visitor Centre is FREE.

There are some short accessible track options available, please see walk/hike tab for more information.

When you visit The Redwoods you will be breathing fresh forest air. Please do not smoke.

Track Status

All walking tracks open. Katore-Wash Horse track Closed. All MTB tracks open but some in the Tokorangi/Wash area need some restorative work after minor damage caused during foresty operations, so please take care in these areas. Lower part of the Blue Lake track adjacent to the road is under water due to high lake levels, so just use the roadside track for this section.
